At long last… another issue of She Shoots to Conquer News!
I
can’t believe it’s been nearly a full year since I’ve written
to you all! I thought for sure I had sent something ‘round last April,
but from my files, it appears the last issue of SS2C News was Autumn
2006,
when I had just returned from Gympie, Australia and the Heart
of Gold Film Festival with MÉNAGE À TROIS.
How time does fly!
Well, Gympie is about to have its second fest (Good Luck,
Toni!) and there’s been loads of news from
SS2C.
Right
after I returned from Australia, we geared up our A PRETTY GIRL crew and jetted
down to my home town of Clearwater, FL to shoot some 2nd Unit footage for the
film, as I wanted to capture the essence of a true Gulf Coast Christmas. Armed
with our Panavision 35mm package, we shot the annual Clearwater Marina Boat
Parade, the Scientologist’s perfectly tacky Winter Wonderland display
and pretty much any palm tree, Manatee or illuminated plastic Jesus/nativity
scene that would stand still. You can see the results of that shoot on the
APG website: www.aprettygirl-movie.com. At the bottom of the home page, you
will note a tiny blue snowflake. Click that link and enjoy the show!
However,
despite the success of that shoot, (as some of you know) we lost our investors
for A PRETTY GIRL just one week before we had planned to begin
pre-production last April. Which, for obvious reasons, left many of us devastated.
We had
worked
for so hard and so long to get everything ready, and then… nothing. Nada.
Niente. Rien. Zip.
So to pick myself up from the mire, I called my friend Amy
and asked her about a wacky idea she had mentioned in passing the previous
February (after I had had my first and only Brazilian Bikini Wax.) That winter,
I had called her to bemoan the disastrous after-effects of my toxic reaction
to the service and ranted on and on (some would say ‘waxed’ but
it’s such an obvious pun…) about the media/society’s role
in ‘shaping’ our maintenance “down there.” As is my
style - I got on a very tall, righteous and wobbly soapbox. Inspired by the
movie currently in her DVD player: Eugene Jarecki’s brilliant documentary,
WHY WE FIGHT, she retorted that I should make my own documentary about the
experience.
What
is it they say about all jokes being 95% truth? She had no idea that that
single off-the-cuff remark would become the answer to my late-Spring theme
song: The Disappearing Investor Blues.
So when I was able to pick myself up off the floor in May, I immediately
dialed her number and asked if she wanted to co-direct this little nugget
with me (since it was her idea in the first place). Before we knew it, we
had a professional Hi-Def camera (thanks again, Tobin!) and 26 interview
subjects; including porn stars, a gynecologist, the people who INVENTED Brazilian
bikini waxing, and a former esthetician who gave us the REAL scoop on what
goes on beyond the waxing table. Suffice it to say, Amy and I now know more
about the hair “down there” than we ever wanted to know – and
we have the footage to prove it!
WHY
WE WAX (a little ditty about the hair… “down there”) runs
about 21 minutes and features the brilliant behind-the-camera talents of Amy
Axelson (Co-director/producer/writer/RGE - Research Goddess Extraordinaire),
Suzanne Pancrazi (Editor/Co-producer),
Neeta Ragoowansi (Music Supervisor) and Alexandre
Gaudieri (Sound
Mixer/Designer).
It features such Adult Film luminaries as Candida
Royalle and Michael
Lucas, (you may not want to click those links at work!) one of the original J
Sisters: Jonice Padilha, former esthetician Mara
Sanchez, novelist (and soon to be mega-star screenwriter) Robin
Slick,
and Dr. Desiree
Clarke, noted NYC OB/GYN. Other interview subjects range from every walk
of life – gay, straight, male and female, and as it turns out – everyone
has an opinion! It’s funny! It’s baudy! It’s educational!
There’s even a merkin fashion show! It’s the can’t-miss
film festival [soon-to-be] hit of 2008!!!
The
film is nearing completion, with only the final sound mix and music clearances
to go. We’ve already started submitting the rough cut
to film festivals around the world! Starting in December/January, be sure
to
check the film page at www.sheshootstoconquer.com for
the up-to-the-minute details about the film. Or if you’re on MySpace – won’t
you be our friend? www.myspace.com/whywewax
I
feel an obligation to note that the festival submission fees for this film
have been donated by some wonderfully supportive patrons who have chosen
to remain anonymous, but without whom, our credit cards would surely melt
under the enormous pressure. So in this very small way, let me say, on
behalf of the entire WWWx team (aka “The Poon-Tang Gang”) THANK
YOU!
As far as A PRETTY GIRL goes, it’s
been on the back-burner for the summer, but now that this little waxing gem
has been birthed, I’ve
dusted it off and am going back to square one: seeking private investors,
independent film producers and simply getting back out there
and making connections which will lead to other connections which will
lead to
other connections and on and on and on! “The journey of a thousand
miles begins with one step”, right?
Thanks to one and all for your constant encouragement,
love and support throughout the years. This is a gloriously bizarre road that
I travel and
never once have any of you said, “Huh???” Or if you did – you
never said it to my face – and for that, I’m eternally grateful!
Much love...
